Photography

Optics in their purest form; images as sharp as possible. When it comes to photography, I'm enthusiastic about both the technology and the results it produces.

I take my photos using the Nikon Z system. At the end of 2023, I switched from the Z7 to the Z8 to take advantage of the faster autofocus and make it easier to photograph moving animals. I particularly enjoy using my ultra-sharp 105mm f/2.8 macro lens and my 800mm f/6.3 super-telephoto lens; in reality the 70-200mm f/2.8 is often in my backpack.

One of my favorite photos, which I never get tired of looking at:

Saving high-resolution images without any loss of quality has the drawback that the images become too large for a website, so the resolution is almost always significantly reduced here. Below is a cropped section of the Lofoten image in its original resolution (click on it for full resolution):

It gets even crazier with panoramas, which easily exceed 30'000 pixels in width. The following panorama actually has a resolution of approximately 36'000×8'200 and a file size (PNG) of at least 290 MB. For a website, even the 2.2 MB remaining after cropping is sometimes too much. And the level of detail shrinks, so that a tree becomes a jumble of green-brown blocks. So when viewing the images, you can always keep in mind how sharp they would be if this weren’t a website.

And here is a 100 % section of the panorama:

For some time now, I’ve been photographing the Live Music Now auditions and benefit concert every year. I avoid using a flash, which can be distracting, and instead make full use of my lenses' maximum aperture. Photographing the musicians in the dim light offers a nice contrast to my nature shots. Since I also play the cello myself, I prefer photographing instrumentalists over singers not just from a photographic standpoint.

You’ll have to check out the photos featuring people on their website. I'm not going to bother getting their privacy consent. But luckily, there are still the instruments.
